Swidget Launches Luminance™ to Help Schools Achieve Alyssa’s Law Compliance
by Swidget | Oct. 20, 2025 | Press Release
Ottawa, ON – October 20, 2025 – Swidget, an IoT-enabled data services business, today announces the launch of Luminance™, a next-generation safety and emergency response system that will focus first on protecting those in K-12 school environments. The announcement comes as schools and communities recognize America’s Safe Schools Week, putting a spotlight on the urgent need for innovative technologies that protect students and staff during everyday and emergency situations – and help districts meet critical safety mandates such as Alyssa’s Law.
In a school emergency, the Luminance platform is activated via a wearable multipurpose ID badge configured to initiate emergency response alerts, cameras and emergency status lights. The cameras, controlled by school officials, provide live situational awareness for first responders, and the wearable badges offer two-way communication tools that enhance both crisis response and everyday safety. The system includes:
-
Wearable, multipurpose ID badges with integrated panic buttons that silently alert 911, local law enforcement and school administrators in pre-arranged situations.
-
Discreet cameras that provide privacy until visibility is needed. The cameras only become active when a staff member initiates an emergency alert via the ID badge. Once activated, cameras can provide first responders with secure, live video and audio streams from the scene of the emergency.
- Smart status lights that alert occupants throughout the building that an event is underway and warn them of areas to avoid.
Unlike crisis-only solutions, Luminance is built to address everyday safety concerns, such as medical emergencies and conflicts in a classroom, ensuring schools are equipped with the best technology available to keep students and staff safe, while supporting compliance efforts with evolving state-level safety legislation.
“America’s Safe Schools Week reminds us that safety is not just about rare emergencies – it’s about students, parents, and educators having daily confidence in their security,” said Cam Wilson, CEO. “With Luminance, Swidget is committed to creating safer learning environments by leveraging our innovative technology to achieve rapid, effective emergency response.”
What sets Luminance apart is its simplicity and accessibility. The system is easy to use, quick to install, and affordable for districts of all sizes. From setup to first use, schools can transition from installation to full operation in days, not months, making Luminance one of the most accessible safety solutions available today. Once deployed, there is minimal management or maintenance required by school officials.
“Technology like Luminance helps schools stay one step ahead,” said Katherine Schweit, former FBI Special Agent, creator of the FBI’s Active Shooter Program, and school safety advocate. “It gives first responders and administrators real-time situational awareness to allow them to make critical and informed decisions during an incident. Solutions like this save lives.”
As more states adopt Alyssa’s Law requirements mandating silent panic alarms that directly alert law enforcement, Luminance provides schools with a turnkey path to compliance. Its integrated panic button badges, 911 notification capabilities, and real-time situational awareness align with the intent of the legislation; helping schools modernize safety infrastructure without costly new construction or complex system overhauls.
With pilot programs already underway and participation at various industry events including the Midwest School Safety Summit, The Bureau Consortium Workplace Violence Symposium, and the K-12 Schools and Campus Safety Symposium, Swidget is building strong foundations for the early adoption of Luminance. These efforts reflect Swidget’s broader dedication to working alongside national and local school safety organizations and communities to set a new standard for everyday and emergency safety.
